villa ilo

2004 finnish archipelago

The natural surroundings of the Finnish archipelago were of paramount importance in the design of this summer house. The house constantly refers to its surroundings: the curved form follows the contour of the rock and the house sits on its highest point maximising its views. The architecture of Villa Ilo is based on natural lines and shadows: the windows are orientated according to the path of the sun and the rhythm of everyday life. The unique setting means that the architecture of Villa Ilo is as much about protecting nature from the interference of man as it is providing man with shelter.
