The Forestry Room at the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Headquarters in Rome demonstrates the various effects created by birch wood utilised in a number of ways: as a solid block, as a thin veneer and either sliced or curled. Even the curtains are constructed from less than millimetre thick strips of veneer fixed together in a woven pattern so that the sun light is able to penetrate through the gaps creating a glowing effect. The importance of forests, wood and careful, high quality construction are integral parts of the Finnish culture and are demonstrated in this design. All load bearing structures are glass which allows them to be extremely thin meaning that the focus remains on the detailing and craftsmanship applied to the wooden finishes. The room was constructed entirely by Wooden Oy, Finland.
